The Making of a Heroine

What’s a hero without a heroine by his side?  The saying goes: There’s a good woman behind every man.  True, but we especially like it when the hero and heroine walk side by side.  Take a gander at the heroine’s cast of characters.

The Girl Next Door

This character explodes with femininity. You will find her every parents dream for their son. Her kindness to others and unassuming qualities are what make this heroine so enduring. Villains love to hate her, rebels love to try to make them theirs, only she transforms them with her beauty and charm.

The Spellcaster

This heroine will put a spell on you with her charm, her wit, and her fun-loving nature. She takes things in stride, is easy-going, and just plain fun to be around. (Elle Woods in Legally Blonde)

The Nonconformist

Rules and Norms.  Who needs ‘em?  They’re overrated to this sexy, sassy, smart chick who feels no need to follow the rest of the pack. She dances to the beat of her own drummer, and who knows, maybe someday the pack will be following her.  Maybe not.  She doesn’t care. (Lorelai Gilmore of The Gilmore Girls)

The Firecracker

Like a big ol’ stick of raw dynamite, this gal is just one match away from blowin’ her top.  She creates quite a report – aka the fireworks term for a bunch of noise – wherever she goes.  She packs a ton of punch.  And has enough explosive energy for her entire world and then some.  Once she’s channeled into a positive direction, however, there’s nothin’ or nobody that can stop her from getting what –or who— she wants. (Samantha Jones from Sex and the City)

The Caregiver

She just can’t help herself. She has to help you, take care of you, make sure you eat your veggies and helps to fix all your problems. Along the way, she’ll teach you a valuable moral lesson or two—and maybe even a thing or two about herself. Everyone needs a Caregiver in their life (especially on laundry day). (Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins)

The Glamour Girl

She has it all or at least that’s what she wants everyone to think. She catches attention with her attractive appearance and keeps men interested with her sparkling personality. Slightly mysterious and not shy, this heroine is fascinated with luxuries and her appearance. She will do whatever she has to do to get the attention her big personality requires.

The Bookish Babe

She’s buttoned up, plays by the rules, and often puts her own feelings aside because it’s what she thinks she’s supposed to do.  The Bookish Babe keeps her emotions buttoned up as tightly as as her blouse.  She hopes someone will be able to crack open her pages and read between the lines, but she’s smart enough to not settle for less than she deserves.  (Paxton Osgood from Sarah Addison Allen’s The Peach Keeper)

The Comeback Kid

This resilient heroine won’t let anyone or anything get her down.  Determination is at her core, and she’ll fight to the bitter end.  Remember when Scarlett O’Hara held up a handful of dirt and proclaimed, “With God as my witness, I will never be hungry again.”?  This is the gumption that defines the Comeback Kid.  She may get knocked down, but she’ll do what it takes to get back up, over and over and over again. (Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind)

The Tomboy

This feisty heroine plays by her own rules.  She doesn’t buy into the notion that a woman needs to act or look or think in a certain way.  In fact, she often goes out of her way to prove to herself and others that she’s a square peg and won’t fit into that round hole.  Louisa May Alcott was a Tomboy character in life.  She didn’t follow societal conventions, but followed her own path, paving the way for those who came after. (Jo March, from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women)

The Benefactress

This heroine is the ultimate Fairy Godmother. She waves her imaginary magic wand and makes problems (usually financial) disappear. There is a nurturing side to her, but there’s also a side that wants her privacy. Don’t be surprised if she doesn’t want any attention for her good deeds and will often provide them anonymously. No matter what, this is one character you want on your side.
