FOCUS ON THE NEW YEAR

So 2012 is done and gone and now we’re ready to start a big beautiful New Year! Every year I try to make resolutions—which I pretty much always fail at by February 1st (except for that year that I’d apparently taken silliness pills and tried to give up chocolate. I lasted until Noon on 1/1 of that year).

Last year though, I decided to try something different and focus on a word that I wanted to use to define the year to come. Last year my husband was moving to temporary housing on January 1st and starting a new job on January 2nd. I knew we had to sell our house and move across the state at some point in that year, my daughter was going to be starting at a new school and a new swim team and I’d have to reestablish my routines. Routines that had hardly gotten set since I’d only quit my day job a few months before. So last year’s word was CHANGE. And oh did we have a ton of that in our lives.

Now at the end of 2012 we’re settled and things are good here in Amish country and I’m excited about what’s to come in 2013. So after a lot of long thought I’ve decided that my word for 2013 is FOCUS.

In the year to come I’m going to try focusing on my career. To not just get more books out but to improve my writing as I go. I’m also going to work on focusing on my other interests a bit more and trying to move forward on all my other goals.

So what’s your word or your resolution for year?

About Patricia Eimer
I'm a small town girl who was blessed with a large tree in the backyard that was a perfect spot for reading on summer days. Mixed with too much imagination it made me a bratty child but fated me to become a storyteller. After a stint of “thinking practically” in my twenties I earned degrees in Business and Economics and worked for a software firm in southwestern Germany but my passion has always been a good book. I currently lives in Pittsburgh with my two wonderful kids and a husband that learned the gourmet art of frozen pizzas to give me more time to write. When I'm not writing I can be found fencing and arguing with my dogs about plot points. Most days the Beagle wins but the Dalmatian is in close second. I'm in a distant third.

    Hi Patricia, Happy New Year!

I love the idea of focus~ It’s basically what I’ve been trying to come to terms with the last few months. Focus is my word for the year if I had to choose one, but I have to make some goals to settle it into my routine. I’ve been struggling to shed some of the blocks in my life that keep me from focusing all of my energy on those few areas that are the most important to me. My resolution is to keep up the process and keep narrowing my focus to family, writing, health, joy and peace.

Love this idea of choosing a word, Patricia. I suspect CHANGE or TRANSITION will be the word of the year for me (and for the family). House on the market and an impending move, husband finishing his doctorate, son #2 moving on to college in the fall. Those are just a few of the transitions we’ll be dealing with in 2013. Also me taking up yoga again and daily walking, both of which will help me deal with those transitions!

Good luck with your FOCUS. I think that’s a brilliant approach to resolutions!

You tried to give up chocolate? Even the thought of that makes me cry.

No resolutions this year, but I love the idea of setting goals (professional and family).

    Happy New Year, Patricia!

What a fantastic blog post – FOCUS is such a great word. In a lot of ways, I think focus is what we’re attempting to do when we set a resolution – but “focus” as a goal really feels more attainable!

    Wishing you a wonderful 2013!
