The Reincarnated Hero

One of the things that I love so much about historical heroes is that they tend to be macho manly men who can do it all. They can hunt, fight, toss their maiden over their shoulder and haul her up a flight of stairs (carrying around a few hundred pounds in armor and weaponry has its advantages). ;) But I’m also modern enough that while I want to be taken care of, I also want my thoughts and opinions heard and taken seriously, and dangit, I want to fight alongside my man.

I’ve read several stories that I really enjoyed about time travel romances. Specifically, historical heroes coming into the future. Such as Jude Deveraux’s A Knight in Shining Armor. This always makes for a good story. These manly hunky men are often taken aback by the wonders of the modern world, a fish out of water. However, while I enjoy reading these stories, I don’t think it would be as fun as it might seem in real life (good thing it’s fiction :D ).

I dated a guy in college who had grown up on a small tropical island and had never been to places like a restaurant, or a mall. I had an actual Crocodile Dundee moment where I had to convince him that the escalator wasn’t going to suck him into the floor. And taking him ice skating was a hilarious experience. But…that can be a bit taxing after a while. And I missed out on Valentine’s Day because he’d never heard of it :)

So what’s the perfect compromise? The Reincarnated Hero. With the RH, you get the super masculine historical hero all wrapped up in a modern package. One of my favorite RHs – Kim Gimhae, the hero from Cole Gibsen’s Katana and its sequel, Senshi. Kim, and the story’s heroine, Rileigh, are reincarnated samurai warriors. They fought, and died, beside each other in ancient Japan, and have been reincarnated to do it again. Kim is a martial arts instructor in the present day, so he’s got modern skillz as well as the old world honor and manly man-ness. He’s the best of both worlds. A true historical hero with all the modern know-how. What more could a girl ask for? :)

Do you have any favorite Reincarnated Heroes?

Michelle, I adore time travel stories. I’m trying to think of one where the hero comes to live in our time. If a hero from the past should happen to materialise in my bedroom right now, I might have to choose Hawkeye from Last of the Mohicans. Now that was a man!!! I tried to read the novel a few months ago but couldn’t get into that older style of novel, I’m afraid. Obviously brilliant characters and story though.
And your story sounds great too! Looking forward to picking it up =))

  2. There are a ton of good movie examples: Chances Are; Switch; Dead Again; even in The Mummy Returns (as the characters have flashbacks of their former lives. Avalon High is a good YA novel that does this with King Arthur characters. It’s a fun trope to use :)
